Jeff Bolte launching into a reentry at Wavedaze 2012
The heart and soul of Wavedaze, along with the ideas and people behind it is Freeride.  This is the most extreme form of riding PWCs, where the rider surfs waves like a surfer would and uses the waves as a jump ramp for aerial maneuvers.  Pioneered in the early days by Scott “Hollywood” Watkins, the re-entry would become the move that defines moto-surf.  The re-entry is how a rider jumps off a breaking wave and lands back on the wave, continuing to ride the wave.

Watkins, who worked for Yamaha Motors, was the most influential freerider, and his style is often cited as the most pure expression of the sport. Simply put, he rode it the way it was supposed to be ridden. Later riders such as Federico Bufacchi, Jimmy and James Visser, Florence Le Vot, Ivo Sehn, Randy Laine, Rick Roy, Clay Cullen, Joe Kenney, and Mark Tearle further innovated moto-surf as more riders began emulating the moves done by surfers and FMX riders. Today, riders such as Taylor Curtis, Pierre Maixent, and Ross Champion are pushing the sport to new heights with tricks suck as double barrell rolls, double backflips, no-handed backflips and so on.  This is truly an exciting and innovative time for the sport of freeride!

Craig Hammond launching into a reentry at Wavedaze 2012
Wavedaze is proud to present the biggest freeride ride area on the East Coast!  Stretched from 8th st to 14th st, riders have 6 blocks of Virginia Beach surf to play in.  Open from 9am to 5pm on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, riders can enjoy ripping up some waves for a full 3 days!  Moto-Surf is usually performed on stand up style watercraft or on small 1-person sit-down PWCs as they are much more nimble than their larger counterparts.

While we encourage people to utilize smaller craft to partake in the Moto-Surf area, there will be a few “couches”.  We take pride in welcoming a diverse crowd of PWC enthusiasts and it only takes a few moments to watch a rider like Steve Brandis to realize that much fun can be had on a “couch.”

We do ask that anyone who has never taken part this type of riding to remain alert at all times & follow a few surf riding rules of etiquette.
